EuphRO2 … the End of an Era

So it was possibly the biggest project that I had involved my self in – Saga, a Ragnarok Online 2 Emulator. How long has it been? I do believe that it has been approximately 8 months or so since that day I signed into the unknown, yet strangely mysterious world of Ragnarok Online 2. The day where I fell in love with the intricate 3D environment, the day when I experienced the Saga RO2 Emulation project.

Never having been a serious gamer, it was my first experience with a 3D MMORPG. The adorable character emotes were such a change for me from the “bubble” emotes in Ragnarok Online, which I had been playing for quite some time. (I remember being entranced by the dancing emote, and being disappointed upon finding out that I could no longer dance after changing job; A bug in the game back then!) I quickly made friends in game, the first of mine being someone I knew in the original EuphRO, Kisa. The daily frolicking of finding mysterious RO2 drops/equips and gathering the courage to face “hard” level 6 enemies was always an adventure. At one point, we gathered the server (Approximately 8-9 people on average at the time) to search for the fabled “Prontera.” Of course, we couldn’t do so in a party; Parties crashed the server back then! Since Ragnarok Online 2 was new and uncharted, we had no idea where to look for Prontera, and chose to search the entire server. Imagine our astonishment upon finding out that Prontera had not been implemented on the server yet!

Eventually, I ended up meeting my soon-to-be best buddy, Lolly. The exact way in which we met escapes me right now, but I do believe that it was because she was helping me somehow. At the time when the player population was about 15~ish players and even fewer talking in channel chat, Lolly acted as a sort of “helpdesk” for players due to her helpful nature. Whether it was the
fact that I did not bug her much, or simply talked
to her aside from “help” questions, we became inseparable during that time. It was she who taught me how to report bugs on the bug tracker, it was she who helped me learn the game; I still believe that she would have been the best choice as a GM, and even sort of expected her to become one, inside.

Fast forward a few weeks later. The Saga project was losing players as a result of lack of promotion of the project. Lolly and I were growing a tad tired of the game, and the time between our logins lengthened. I recalled seeing somewhere that a site dedicated to the Saga open beta server, now dubbed EuphRO2, was getting ready to launch in order to generate interest for the project. On a whim, I visited the website to find a forum with about 3 registered users; Maybe 2 of which were developers. What caught my eye was a recruitment thread for forum moderators. I had time on my hands, had experience moderating, liked the project… why not? I remember specifically noting that I had a charismatic, easy to get along with, personality and strove to never disappoint my superiors. Upon logging in next time, I was greeted by a congratulations email by Nibelungen, my boss, and bore the green color of a forum moderator.

From there, things went pretty quickly. Before I knew it, I was the head forum moderator, and later the forum Administrator with a shiny new orange color. Nibelungen said that it was because he detected trustworthiness and charisma in how I acted; I was honored to have been recognized as such. Then came that fateful day. Getting messages from Nibelungen was always a thrill, as I enjoyed interacting with the staff, but I wasn’t prepared for the contents of this PM. I was awestruck as I read his words, “How would you like to be the first Ragnarok Online 2 GM?” Not to say there hadn’t been any GMs for testing purposes, but I would be the first public GM with GM duties, paving the road and setting the standards for generations of staff members to come. I graciously accepted, and was awestruck as my character, whom I had played with alongside my friends was promoted to a level 99 GM.

At first I was a little introverted, and without [GM] tags and GM outfits at the time, I blended in pretty well with the rest of the players, with the exception of equipment created by the !item command that did not drop yet. A few times I even got accused of being a hacker after being spotted teleporting or running fast using !speed 3000. Gradually, I gained the players’ confidence and became a cheerful support GM, with occasional “spawn” events of course. Events weren’t easy at the time; GMs had extremely limited powers and we had to think creatively. As the server population steadily increased, Nibelungen and I organized a server-wide picture when we reached the astonishing milestone of 40 players online! Of course it was a tad hard for the players to see or listen to us; We simply didn’t stand out. At the time the notorious “clothing bug” prevented the shoes and lower equips from showing up, resulting in generic novice clothes instead. The day was a huge success however, and that was the day that I came up with the idea to append “[GM]” before the GMs‘ names.

Since then, my career was off and on when it came to duties. I was always busy doing something but it was never really one thing at a time. I learned how to script NPCs and scripted the new town, Cognito and opened it to the server with great pride. All the while, I was just so touched with the love of my players and the support they gave me. Behavioral issues were rare and the players had a general sense of unity. The staff – player relationship was absolutely wonderful, anyone could tell that we were in perfect harmony. Looking back, it was an Era of prosperity, now called by some, The Chii Era.

Around the time Christmas rolled around, both the staff and the players got a present. For the staff, we were finally able to wear our much needed GM Suits, distinguishing from other players. (Unfortunately the male characters
were too distinguishable… their “robes” more closely resembled dresses.) For the players, I prepared what was to by my greatest even yet. Spawn data was altered, Npcs were prepared on a closed off map to the public, christmas trees were put up, and prizes were made available to all. The prizes too, were very generous indeed. They included Auges, headgears, exclusive armor, players had a great time hunting special “Christmas Spawns” to collect items which they would trade in to “Santa’s Elves” (Ellr) npcs to receive their prizes. Of course there were traps too, but all in the name of fun. To top it off, a GM character by the name of “Santa Claus” responded to mail he received using the Mail System and shipped players what they wanted for Christmas. As I said, we had to be creative on how to do events back then! Perhaps what touched me the most at the end of this event was the “thank you” gifts I received in my inbox, mostly forum signatures dedicated to me.

Not soon after, we held a new Server-Wide picture for Saga’s anniversary in January. The picture was radically different. EuphRO2 now boasted 200+ players. The players were organized neatly into Prontera Church under my guidance, still showing the world the degree of respect that staff and players had with each other. Of course, there simply had to be an exception, as one jealous player angrily flamed me on the forums. It was for no valid reason, but he did voice his jealousy of the respect that I had earned from my players. Following procedure, the staff did make clear that if he had a valid reason for disliking my style and wished me to be dismissed from GM duties, he could write a petition. I admit that I was a little frightened at this thought, but I should have known not to be. The complete opposite occurred. I watched as players violently flamed the member, Kobuto Takagawa, and stood up in my defense. It really touched me, and the rest of the staff; I remember as Nibelungen remarked, “Its amazing to see how much the server loves you. It just goes to show how valuable you are to the team.”

Of course, all good things must come to an end. Throughout my time at EuphRO2, it became a sort of trend to draw pictures or other gifts dedicated to me, something that some of the best artists I met did for me. The gift art meant a lot, and at one point was even salvaged from a hard disk crash. But now, my school was demanding an increasingly longer portion of my time. In a painful and difficult decision, I resigned from all duties from EuphRO2 on January 21, 2008. This decision absolutely shattered me, but somehow I couldn’t tear myself away. Nibelungen had chosen to leave all my access to the server’s script directory, my GM account, my forum admin status, and more. However, due to the deep attachment I had with the community, I came back every so often. The next day, I saw that the forum had a record number of members online the day I resigned.

I still came in once in a while, but slower in frequency. On a whim, one day I decided to google my name, “[GM] Chii.” I was surprised, the page was full of ME. Never would I thought that I would see the day. Whats more is that all the gift art and my relationship with players resulted something else. A EuphRO2 meme, called “Everyone loves Chiihad spawned forth. So I had achieved meme status; I wasn’t sure whether to be flattered or afraid. But it seemed like I was surviving on the server, despite not being there. Even GMs hired later on knew my name and reputation. I had truly left my mark in RO2, Saga, and EuphRO2 history. However, I am rather uncertain about KRO2’s future. Patches have been delayed and have been neglected to be released. The game was voted worst of the year in Korea. Has the game been canned or is being reworked for a vigorous revival?

But as for my time at Saga/EuphRO2, I couldnt’ve done it any better, nor would I have done it any different. I feel as if I had lived my EuphRO2 life to the utmost fullest and now its time to move on. After achieving meme status and even the ability to google myself and see the page covered with my name, I truly feel that I have done what many dream of doing. To have been what many dream of being. To have created a legacy which many dream of creating.

Finally wishing to put this case to rest, one day I logged in, and via my access to the script directory to EuphRO2, I developed an npc that would change my name to “Etna” and return myself to being a normal player. As I ran the !reloadscripts command, I hesitated a little, then finally talked to my npc.

How I wish I could go back and revisit those old times as well. No one here would remember me for sure, but I can say that I really looked up to all of the regulars in the game during those months before that one game-breaking Gravity update that wrecked the player levels and economy and basically meant the beginning of the end for the server. I really loved it there, and the small community meant everyone was really able to interact and bond together much more easily than in the other big name MMOs.

Actually I’ve been trying to recapture some of those fun memories from all of my MMO experiences, since I put a lot of emotional investment into each of those characters I’ve played and roleplayed over the years. It really hurts to never be able to access those chars again once a given server or game gets taken offline forever. So recently I’ve been looking into server emulation for each of those games, and I successfully recreated a lot of my chars in some of them. Of course I’d love to do the same with this game but as mentioned, the client seems to have vanished from all corners of the web. I guess that is to be expected after several years but I was really hoping to run around again in that world, even if it is in a single player context.

But still, little did I think back then that I would become so attached to those experiences and memories. I had just barely started on the day that the Prontera Culverts map was newly opened for an event, and my random exploration of that area led to me becoming so hooked on the game when I saw how close-knit the players were, and how everyone genuinely had fun in the game. A rarity indeed! I loved it there so much that I brought in a dear friend from another game and got her hooked as well. But ever since some disappointing events happened on the forums I lost contact with her. I kinda wish I could get back in touch with her and all of the others I knew from that time, but well, time marches on and everyone has moved on with life by now, as sad as it is to realize and accept. Even I’ve changed a lot since then…..

Maybe I’m thinking back too fondly of those good times while ignoring the bad ones, but I think that’s the normal way that nostalgia works, haha. Thank you Chii for being part of those good memories, along with everyone else who helped to make the server what it was despite all of those troubles caused by Gravity and others. I never found any other online game community that I enjoyed quite as much as this, so it truly stands out in my heart. <3

Even after so many years, I still miss that game and it’s fantastic community held together by both players and GMs. Too bad the game was dropped and soon after the Euphro2 server and with it most of the infos about that time and the online friends one had back then. There are many things I remember about it, like that Rice Ball event I had missed and then compensated by farming a shitload of the in-game currency to buy them off people, to trade them by contacting Chii and in the end receive the “Auge” i wanted so badly, haha.
“Where the fuck can i find Rubble?” Was probably the most asked question in-game, but our community gladly answered it 10 times a day without stupidly mentioning one’s friend “google”.
OmP – Oh my Poring! Porings were… ARE gods. It took a while to gather Poring-Followers, but in the end, the capital of Rune Midgard, Poringtera was established.
That town… Cognito…. Chii made me help her by creating an account on the official korean server to spot all the NPC’s locations. It turned out to be quite some work, but in the end I was really happy to see the town go life on the euphro2 server. I still have all those screenshots, but barely any of the actual gameplay ;( – taking screenshots had to be done via prt scr + paint for example – this is probably the reason for there to be only so few screenies around on the web. I really wish i had smacked that button more ;(
I also remember how much time I spent to remain the highest lvl player – farming Poporings and wolves in some sort of swamp – there was a huge ass purple Poring too, the Hugeling, which sadly didn’t drop anything yet as most of the other bosses. Actually no one managed to reach the max level of 50 back then – from lvl 45 and up, every level took days of killing wolves – and shortly after dinging level 48, the server was taken down into maintenance and the max level was changed to 99 – scaling all player’s levels alongside. (ofc. automatically exceeding 50 – a day or two later, players above lost their levels)
Many players stopped playing at that point – i took a break myself after the extensive grinding during the previous month – but came back a few weeks later to see the Server up and running with many new players – the high level content was a bit abusive though – farming some kind of “Bunnyflowers” as magician while backpaddling – making them unable to hit you. after a second, complete reset, everyone just started grinding there from lvl 10 to the end of days :p
Many friends had already left – and so did our beloved GM Chii, who really put her hearth into the server. She always did her best to make us players happy – be it to allow us to exchange the above mentioned rice balls by creating a virtual list, by adding events, listening to players and being active. In many other games/ on other servers, GM’s often fail to listen to their community and change things for the bad / implement new things that aren’t needed / are unbalanced or bring profit to them in any way. The server was always free and there were no donation items, meaning it run without any profit – this is something you don’t see anymore nowadays.

A big thanks to the staff and the community for allowing me to have all those great memories ;)
I hope you are all doing well in your lives and hope to eventually meet you again somewhere on the web. Take care,

Isn’t it interesting how every so often, even years after the fact, people find themselves reminiscing about past events that they were a part of? It’s the sort of irreplaceable feeling that can never again be topped, yet we keep trying regardless. Even then, time and time again, we find ourselves looking back– it just goes to show how profound of an experience it was for all of us. It left a permanent impression on us.

Thank you for all the wonderful memories! I had forgotten how strong the Porings were in the game and how nobody had a clue about where to find rubble. It’s such a shame that the Gate of the World incarnation of RO II has pretty much disappeared from the web. Even the client is difficult to get a hold of these days…

Hold on to your memories and don’t let them go, Shadowlink! The page is in dire need of updating (and modernization), but there are a good amount of screenshots here too! I hope you enjoy browsing through them, and I’d be happy to add any screenshots you might want to share as well. Thank you for stopping by!!

After reading what the others said I felt like I had to add more lol. I totally agree with what everyone's saying. You are a great person, a great GM, and a great friend (and you still are). I remember starting EuphRO2 and not knowing anyone, thinking it would be like the time when I played some other MMORPG where I'll be soloing the whole way quietly since the community wasn't that great. However meeting the others including yourself made it so much more than just a game. I always look back now and think about all the good, fun and funny times we've had together, as well as the bad where we would all stick together. Out of my entire online gaming life this was truly one of my favourite times ^^ The server wouldn't be the same without, so thank you :3 And yes the server did started going downhill after you left.

Ah… I curse my luck. I wish I could have been there with you when EuphRO2 was new. It sounded like a lot of fun. I also wish I could've seen the Legacy in the making. Watch it grow and enjoy the good times.

But my luck had me by the throat. It tortured me in a very cruel way. I discovered EuphRO2 to late to enjoy any of it… When I joined EuphRO2, you left shortly after. My luck only allowed me to see you leave. I read the comments about you leaving and wish myself that you weren't leaving, even though I just saw you for less than a day. I wanted to be there and discover the new world and be behind you when you led it into the world of MMORPG.

This has nothing to do with me whatsoever though. Nobody here knows me. To you, I'm just a random person commenting… It's all you now, it always was you, and it will be forever. Good luck, work hard in school, and work the way everyone knows you can. If you ever have the time, come back to EuphRO2 and say hi to me. That alone would make my day. But say hi to all your loving and important friends first like you should and would, before saying hi to a random, unimportant, selfish guy like me. :)

Im from a new generation of Ro2 players and i grow hearing your legend..

I became close friend of Nill and heard even more of you.

The only i can say is that is an honor to have this chance to write in your topic..

You still in the heart of many ro2 players some of them dont know how to act in this times

they are full of nostalgic, and i begining to think that the most great thing of that game was you..

i know that i dont live in that times the experience, but for some reason i understand in many ways what was the true felling of that era in the voices of many…

for now i salute you and wish you the best of luck in all your proyects…

Your legacy will always be a mark for us all in RO2 and hopefully more to come. With all the love and respect. Sincerely Wolf"

I almost cried as well ;-; We're all gonna miss you GM chii, even though I wasn't on the server much when you were still a GM, I do remember your dance party and you did seem to have a very nice personality and I wish I could've been on the server more to get to know you.

But yes, I'll say it again, we're gonna miss you chii! DX You need an NPC in prontera or something to tell the story of chii, or a statue or something.

Nibelungen This email was posted on Saturday, January 26, 2008, 5:24 PM and i never got a reply from you, so here goes:

      (Hello Gm’s of EuphRO2! My name is Valna(forum Name) a.k.a. YukoAhso(ingame Character
Thief). I realize that “The Wipe” is always an announcement in almost all Ragnarok games for
some reason unknown to me,so i don’t complain about it. The reason i want to keep my
character and account saved, because i spent a lot of time building it up ever since Gm Chii
ran this server. I enjoy the players they are never rude to me,they assist me with question
i could not figure out, and they are entertaining with conversations.
I went through many characters till i stucked with an Thief and soon an Enchanter. Im at
Clvl 19 with my Thief Jlvl 19. Im almost to lvl 20! I would love to contribute to this
Server as i can with others, the Gms are nice how could you not be mad at them? This is why i
love EuphRO2. The game has a awesome interface and basic controls. It’s not boring, the lvling
is quite fair. Hp drain bug are not a major problem, actually its quite
helpful, skills, stats, weapon upgrades are nothing i seen in a mmorpg. Either My char gets
deleted or not i can always start from scratch. For you Gm Keep up the good work! You will
be well respected for you time and keeping the server stable for that iim greatful. I guess
that’s all i got to say. So til then, stay active, help others, rule the sever with an iron
fist, keep players in line, eat your vegetables and if there is a jail in Euphro2, i would like to visit it one day.

Well gotta go! I think this is more than 500 words We will see the results after the wipe.
      Goodbye!)

Yeah this was a long time ago and i really miss this server. NO matter what i did my character will always reset and get wiped. ^_^ Man oh man this game had me excited and GM Chii was always around to brighten everyone’s day and a few others. If it was around today i still be playing it. We can never get those memories in days past. But i’m glad i witnessed it and was part of the EuphRO family. With that i will cherish these nostalgia memory till the end of time. I wish they brought it back instead of this new revamp version which is not all that good. ^_^

Chii,I am simply astonished by your amazing accomplishments as the first [GM] on Sega EuphRO2! You've made so many people happy and looks to me like you built a lot of great friendships. Reading through your blog I learned a lot about you and why you were chosen as a [GM]. I had always wondered why everyone would say; "We love you Chii!!" and getting to know you first hand had truly shown what a loveable person you really are! <3 As the first [GM] on DiviniaROII I feel as if we can relate on a few levels :) It's great to have someone like you to talk with and share experiences. I personally love how you did Events! You're so creative and smart! The hand scripted NPCs were brilliant and that Christmas Tree in Hoddemimes, so cute! I hope we can become great friends Chii and I can honestly agree, "You truly have set your mark upon the Legacy of the World of Ragnarok Online 2!"Love,[GM] Rini

Okay I'd feel abit guilty if I didn't comment after taking about 5 minutes of my time to read a friend's blog. (Only because SOMEONE bugged me on MSN >.>…okay maybe you didn't, I bugged you =P) I personally always thought it was interesting hearing about those stories that you always talked about playing this game EuphRO2 during class, at the time I honestly didn't know what the *&^% you were talking about but now that I see this blog. You were a pretty cool person online. Oh by the way Chii (Saying IGN to protect people from knowing her RL name), I need your help tomorrow for a fun summer project. I'm going to jack some of David's food to get him to lose weight then you're helping me to get Ricky un-queered.

These were happy times for sure, and i hope that they'll live in your memory forever ^_^ .Good luck for everything then ^_^ .

I remember those days on EuphRO2, you always made them enjoyable, Chii. xD If Nibelungen hadn't picked you to be a GM on the server, I wonder what it would be like today – definitely not where it is today. The fact that you have so many supporters isn't a surprise to me either, you were always so nice to everyone in the game. x3When you resigned from the EuphRO GM team, I'm sure I wasn't the only one feeling down, and after reading your blog I know I wasn't the only one. xDBut just because you're too busy to play with us now, doesn't mean you'll be busy later! Until then, we'll always remember how great of a GM you were. :3You're Friend,Nill…And we can always chat while you eat dinner! xD

i second what draco said. you were by far the best GM there was. and ofcourse, those days when euphro2 was growing, were the best time of my euphro2 life. I enjoyed everything. drawing your character for you, you giving me that bunny band during the black market (LOL), trying to kill the monster you summoned (big purple poring i forgot what it was called) and failing horribly (at the beach), sharing images in MSN, haha.. they were all just too fun.as same with draco, i wasnt there in the beginning. But out of all the other members that was playing RO, i became one of your trustworth y friends. just getting to know you was a bliss :)Honestly, you're THE true ideal GM that everyone is looking for. i think thats why everyone loved you and praised you, thus starting the Chii Era. anyways..whenever your in trouble.. heh, we're here for you :D lets try make new memories and start anew just like euphro2. i miss those great memories. xD

Those were good times on euphRO2, and I still stand by my words about you being the best GM it ever had. Everything's gone downhill after you left and it continues to spiral downward thanks to someone in particular.Even though I wasn't there from the very beginning, at least I was around when the population started growing. And those were good times indeed. And even during the time where Kobuto attacked you on the forum, I believe that our rally to back you up was really something to be proud of. Oh and I'd like to congratulate you once again for the fame that you have achieved. Not many web people get to be as big as you have become on EuphRO2, so this is one status that is worth praise. ^^

I'm very touched by how much respect you earned from both your players (something a lot of gms fail to accomplish) and from myself. You truely were a great gm ^^. The time I spent on the server was meaningful and I truely enjoyed it. I hope you'll continue to be my friend as long as you can ^^.ThanksZoey

<3 You're such a sweetheart. The early days hanging out with you were seriously the best, out of all my time on that server. Everything was just waiting to be explored, and I had a great time sharing that with you.(And you have far more patience than I do, which is why you'll always make a better GM than me. XD)

Hi there! Are you the new transfer student? You should probably register at the faculty office first so you can get an ID. Maybe we'll be in the same class!
